Few tourists to this island paradise have seen the poverty or are aware of the unmet health needs of its people. Father Justin Nembhard, Rector and Dean of St. James Parish Church in Montego Bay invited EMMF to see the conditions in the slums served by six mission churches established by St. James. EMMF health professionals conducted a site visit and interviewed lay pastors and other Jamaicans throughout the region, and they have filed their reports. They identified the major unmet health conditions as: · diabetes and its ophthalmic complications · hypertension · infectious diseases · infant malnutrition · sickle cell anemia · and the multifaceted health problems of the elderly. EMMF's Board of Trustees has authorized the Executive Director to add Jamaica to the list of mission stations served by EMMF. The first EMMF supported mission team has returned and filed their report. Links
